Power Of Attorney
A Power of Attorney is a legal document that grants another person legal authority to act on your behalf. Power of Attorney can be very flexible, and there are different types available.
For example, a Durable Power of Attorney allows someone to act for you if you become incapacitated or disabled, and allows them to make financial and healthcare decisions for you. A Springing Power of Attorney is one that becomes effective only upon incompetency. There is also a Short Form Power of Attorney, typically used with financial institutions.
In a short form, the following powers can be chosen:

- tangible personal property transactions
- bond, share, and commodity transactions
- banking transactions
- business operating transactions
- insurance transactions
- beneficiary transactions
- gift transactions
- fiduciary transactions
- claims and litigation
- family maintenance
- benefits from military service
- records, reports and statements
Power of Attorney is usually used in conjunction with a Will or Living Trust. This combination of documents allows pre-death estate planning.
